Flight and Travel Information Q&A's
Q. Do you have any recommendations with who to book my flight with?
A. Try Sidestep.com they have all the cheaper airline companies on one site, there is also airtreks but you have to call them for Guatemala. 1.877.AIRTREKS. also hotwire.com and continental airlines
Q. Where do I fly to?
A. Fly into Guatemala City, Guatemala (GAU)
Q. What date do I fly to Guatemala City?
A. Most people are going to fly into Guatemala City on Friday 1st July and stay one night in Antigua the closest beautiful city worth a visit for sure (I would not recommend staying in Guatemala City, most travelers only land there and then move on straight away!). From Antigua, we are going to arrange a group bus for you early Saturday morning (6th Nov($23)) at 9:00 am to San Pedro (3hour private bus trip). You can also arrange your own transport and meet us in San Pedro.
Q. When do I fly back to NYC
A. There will be a group bus (bus ride to Antiqua not included ($23)) early morning Saturday 9th July. You will get to the Guatemala airport by 12:30pm Saturday afternoon for your flight home. Again we will need to know this prior to travel date.
Q. How do I get from Guatemala City to Antigua?
A. There are private taxi's from the airport to Antigua
Q. Do you have any recommendation of Hotels to stay at in Antigua?
A The Black Cat Inn 9a Calle Oriente, 5 Antigua, Guatemala (NOTE*not the black cat hostel which is very noisy) (about $30 a night for a double occupancy, with own private bathroom, includes breakfast)
Q. Is Antigua safe?
A. Yes there are lots of travelers walking around, but I would not recommend like any new place, to walk around late at night on your own
Q. Can I make my own way there?
A. Of course
Q. I don't like traveling on my own, can you set me up with a travel buddy?
A. This can certainly be arranged, again let us know before you book your flight, so maybe you can be on the same plane.
Q. I need to leave early or arrive late how do I get to the retreat or back home?
A. From Antigua: There are 2 shuttle-bus companies that go directly to San Pedro from Antigua. One charges 60Q and the other 70Q. They take about 3 hours, including a 15 minute rest break at a petrol station for food, drink, and to use the restroom. This is the the most convenient way to get to San Pedro, there is no need to take a boat from Panajachel. There are excellent views of Lake Atitlan from the mountain road approaching San Pedro. Tickets are available at the travel agency across the street from the Black Cat Hostel in Antigua, and perhaps from other agencies.
From Guatemala City: Direct buses from the center of Guatemala City are provided by three San Pedro companies: Transportes Mendez, Veloz San Pedrana and Transportes Wendy. Buses leave at 11am (Wendy), 11:30am (Mendez), 12:00pm (Pedrana), 12:30pm (Pedrana), 2:00pm (Mendez) and 4:00pm (Mendez) and pass along 20a Calle between 4a and 5a Avenida, Zona 1. The 4 hour journey to San Pedro costs 25Q (approx. $3.50).By boat
By boat from Panachel 10Q for Mayans and Latinos, 25Q for people with white skin
